Bus & Coach Gallery http://windybus.fotopic.net/ 22 rows en-gb 60 SELNEC 40 Event October 31st-November 1st 2009 http://windybus.fotopic.net/c1776439.html The weekend of October 31st/November 1st saw the "SELNEC 40" event in Manchester to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the creation of the SELNEC PTE (SELNEC stands for "South East Lancashire, North East Cheshire). This organisation was created from the eleven municipal bus companies, which represented the areas that later became known as "Greater Manchester" in the 1974 local government reorganisation, and at that time SELNEC then became the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive, which continued to oversee the area's bus services until 1986, when the government's Transport Bill ordered the deregulation of the services. The weekend's event took place at two locations, the Museum of Transport at Boyle Street in Manchester, and one of the large car parks at Sportcity, near to the City of Manchester Stadium. It was run jointly by the museum and the SELNEC Preservation Society, and featured a large number of their buses, many of which were painted in the distinctive orange and white livery that was once such a familiar sight around this area. It was easy to see why they had needed the extra venue, with so many buses on display they would never have got them all into Boyle Street! The two sites were linked by a free heritage shuttle bus service, and there was also the usual heritage shuttle to Manchester Victoria Railway Station as well (very handy for me, since I was arriving by train). Having been at a steam railway event at the nearby ELR on Saturday, Sunday was the only day I could attend, and weatherwise I certainly picked the worst day of the two - it was blowing a Gale and there were a number of very heavy showers too. Thankfully there were enough clear spells in between to allow me to photograph most of the buses that were on display, that was when I wasn't too busy chasing my hat around the car park that is, I'll have to superglue it on next time I think!:-) All in all and excellent display and very enjoyable, not only to see and photograph these buses, but also to ride on a number of them as well, so a big well done to all the volunteers and bus owners for making it all possible. I just hope I'm still around for the 50th if they decide to hold one. My thanks to all involved, it was an excellent event. ]]> Sun Nov 1 2009 Trans-Lancs Rally 2009, Heaton Park http://windybus.fotopic.net/c1753046.html After missing the 2008 event, it was back to Heaton Park in Manchester again on Sunday 6th of September 2009, for the annual Trans-Lancs Rally, which featured a large number of buses and, trucks and classic vehicles. Unlike my last visit in Monsson like conditions in 2007, this time the weather was fine for the most of the day, and the Sun even shone for the early part of the event, though in typical Manchester fashio it did cloud over, and became quite gloomy with a few spots of rain just before the end. Heaton Park also offers an excellent Tramway and Tram Museum, and a certain amount of time was spent riding on those and taking photographs of them, these can be found in a section of their own in my 'Tram & LRT Gallery'. Likewise, the trucks and clasic vehicles will also be placed in sections of their own in the 'Heritage' and 'Truck & Mobile Crane' Galleries in due course. Another selection of fine buses on display, with a number of visiting modern buses on site as well. Always nice to have a ride on a routemaster, and to see an open back bus with a conductor on it, just like it used to be round here up till the early 1970s. When sufficient numbers of a particular operator's coaches are obtained they will be moved to their own separate gallery. June 15th saw yet another Shearing tour visiting Rawtenstall Station with a party of visitors, who were having a steam train ride on the East Lancashire Railway. August 16th saw a coach load of visitors up from Truro for a ride on one of the ELR Steam Engines. The passengers were dropped off at Bury Station, and then the coach travelled up to Rawtenstall to collect them at the other end. The coach is seen here in the car park alongside Rawtenstall Station. September 13th saw an 'Oakleaf' coach from Barnsley parked outside 'Treasure island' near to the Rawtenstall West Signal Box, not sure if it was a party of kids, or just a tour party stopping for a meal at the pub/restaurant next door. October 25th saw yet another coach waiting outside Rawtenstall Station, this time for a party who had been having a trip on a steam train during the ELR's Autumn Steam Gala. The coach this time belonged to a company called 'Timewell's Travel', and appeared to be from the Midlands somewhere. On the 14th of December 2008 there were two coaches parked near to the station, both of these belonged to 'Don Fraser' from Ormskirk, Lancashire. Several more coaches were seen waiting for visitors outside Rawtenstall Station in September 2009, and these included coaches from 'Saffords' and 'Whittle Coaches' of Kidderminster. ]]> Tue Jan 29 2008 Chalkwell Coaches http://windybus.fotopic.net/c1399507.html This Chalkwell coach was spotted outside Rawtenstall Station on the East Lancashire Railway on Saturday 27th of October, and was awaiting the return of a party of visitors who were taking a ride on a steam train. It was a filthy, murky afternoon, and not the best of conditions for taking photographs, but then again, coaches from Kent are a bit of a rare sight in deepest, darkest (literally that day) East Lancashire, and I just couldn't resist taking a few shots of this impressive looking vehicle. Saturday 27 October 2007: This Chalkwell coach was spotted outside Rawtenstall Station on the East Lancashire Railway on Saturday 27th of October, and was awaiting the return of a party of visitors who were taking a ride on a steam train. ]]> Sun Oct 28 2007 LTT Open Day - Blackpool October 2007 http://windybus.fotopic.net/c1399423.html For the third Sunday running the sky was blue and the Sun was shining on the Fylde Coast, and this time it was off there for the Bus display at St Chad's Headland, and the ride out to the Busworks Open Day at Brinwell Street on Blackpool 334. It was a pity that the bright Sun made photographing some of the buses difficult, but it was still preferable to being soaked to the skin!:-) I also took a number of pictures of some of the other Blackpool buses and coaches, and a number of the trams, these can be found in other sections of this and my other galleries. ]]> Sun Oct 28 2007 GM Buses 8460 at Fleetwood http://windybus.fotopic.net/c1394777.html I was standing outside the new RNLI station at Fleetwood on Sunday 21st of October 2007, just getting ready to take a picture of the building, when I suddenly noticed an old 'orange' double-decker GM Buses Leyland Atlantean heading towards me. These things used to be a familiar site in the area where I live, and I just had to get a shot. Later I found the bus empty and parked up, and took a few more, and the results can been seen in this gallery. The sheet in the bus window said that the bus used to operate in the Rochdale area, so I'm sure I probably travelled on it when it was in service. It was great to see this bus appear at a time when I was least expecting it, and nice to see what a wonderful restoration job had been done on it. Lots of visiting coaches to be seen, many bringing visitors in for the Blackpool Illuminations. Most of the shots in this collection were taken at various locations between the Tower, Talbot Square, Gyn Square and Cleveleys and Fleetwood. Mind you, it was hard not to with the current "Bus war" that's going on there, perhaps this page should have been titled " A report from the battlefront" instead!:-) Several shots were taken near to Preston Marina, and the rest outside the railway station on Fishergate whilst I was waiting for my train. Not the best of locations for photography, especially on a Saturday afternoon with so many cars and pedestrians about. With so many buses to be seen though I really must go back there soon for a dedicated day of bus photting I think, I lost count of the number that I saw in just a 20 minute period! ]]> Sat Oct 6 2007 Trans Lancs Historic Vehicle Rally 2007 http://windybus.fotopic.net/c1362367.html It was off to Heaton Park, Manchester on Sunday the 2nd of September 2007 for this year's Trans Lancs Historical Vehicle Rally, and yet again the weather controllers were very cruel, and after a very dry Saturday decided to give us all a good soaking again. The deluge paused briefly whilst I took some of my earlier shots, but by mid-afternoon I was fighting a losing battle, and it was a great effort just to keep my camera dry, and prevent the blowing rain from getting into my lens all the time. It's not much fun when everything is dripping wet, including your hands, and you can see just how dark and gloomy it looked at times from some of the shots. In spite of all that I will no doubt be doing it all again next year, even if the weather is just as bad. I'm obviously not the only madman out there after seeing so many other photters doing exactly the same thing!:-) Sunday 2 September 2007: It was off to Heaton Park, Manchester on Sunday the 2nd of September 2007 for this year's Trans Lancs Historical Vehicle Rally, and yet again the weather controllers were very cruel, and after a very dry Saturday decided to give us all a good soaking again. The deluge paused briefly whilst I took some of my earlier shots, but by mid-afternoon I was fighting a losing battle, and it was a great effort just to keep my camera dry, and prevent the blowing rain from getting into my lens all the time. It's not much fun when everything is dripping wet, including your hands, and you can see just how dark and gloomy it looked at times from some of the shots. ]]> Sun Sep 2 2007 Kirklees & Huddersfield Transport Rally 2007 http://windybus.fotopic.net/c1346532.html It was off to Huddersfield for this year's Transport Rally at Greenhead Park, and thankfully the weather was better than forecast (Aunty Beeb got it wrong again!). Only a couple of very short and light showers, and then it was blue sky and sunshine for most of the afternoon, and a very pleasant day was had by all. Lots of nice buses and vintage vehicles on display again, and here are a selection of them. It was nice to travel on the vintage bus which was being used as a shuttle service between the Park and Huddersfield Bus Station.
